Oil degrades over a period of time. Sludge and acids are by-products of degraded oil. Dark color and foul odors are also indicators. A small one-time-use kit called a total acid number test will determine if the oil has degraded beyond use. TAN numbers greater than 0.7, indicate the oil should be replaced. (Tank replacement)
